Syria's army, especially, would be obliterated in a second if it moved a finger against Israel. Assad is no fool, what he wants most of all is to stay in power, not destroy Israel. I don't believe that his antagonism towards Israel is motivated by a truly anti-Semitic or pro-Palestinian state of heart. He, like any dictator, needs an enemy to demonize in front of his people to justify his dictatorship. A dictatorship only lasts so long when there is nothing nearby for it to confront. The only Syrian who would not benefit from an amical relationship with Israel is Assad, as his power would soon falter.
<img width='1' height='1' nation on the planet could be telling them to stop bombing lebanon, and they would still continue until they achieve whatever goal it is they think they can achieve. i think, therefore, that it is a waste of ink and/or spit to criticize them or try to reason with them, however justified the complaints might be, however rational the arguments. let's just wait until they finish what they're doing, and see what can be salvaged for lebanon, the palestinians, and the "peace process".
<img width='1' height='1' falling. everything is muffled, life slows down, you can just relax and enjoy nature, see how nature can completely subdue and re-naturalize even the biggest cities on Earth.

last night, after celebrating eric's birthday at saigon grill, eunji, judith and i went to see this play/rock show in the east village. really good show, the music was great (for the most part) and the guy was hilarious onstage. www.knockoutdrops.com/bellevue.htm. i hear they're about to get picked up by a big theater. anyway, afterwards we trudged over to the west side, with snow blowing in our face for most of the time. but it was so quiet and peaceful when the wind let up. we ended up at this small bar called kettle of fish, apparently one of the places that bob dylan started out at. we hung out there for a while; i drank this awesome belgian trappist beer. so good. then subway back up, then some grilled ham-and-cheese sandwich making at 2 am, and then sleep! until winter league location was a classical greek amphitheater built around a large sandy area. this sandy area is where we going to practice. needless to say, this classical greek amphitheater was located in the Columbia campus. and i was taking the subway to it. from Columbia. anyway. for some reason, i had a large bath towel with me as my only piece of luggage. no cleats, no water bottle. just a towel. my subway trip from Columbia to Columbia required that i change subway once. and during that one changeover, i forgot my towel in the train! i got off the first train, and right as that train starts to type='text'>

you are about to read my seven cents on the current crisis concerning the Danish cartoons lampooning radical, terrorist Islam.

the two countries where the riots are happening are Iran and Syria. not at all coincidentally, I believe, these are the two countries in the Middle East whose governments are most at odds with the Western world. one important distinction between them is that Syria has an ostensibly secular government, which i'm sure wouldn't refrain from having others use religion to elicit certain reactions from Syrians, while Iran is unabashedly religious, and so can elicit those desired reactions openly. could it be that those governments pounced on such a small, insignificant issue to divert attention, both domestically and internationally, from the trouble that they are currently in, Iran with the nuclear issue and Syria with the Lebanon issue?

frankly, even if they have intentionally been whipped up by their governments, i can't empathize with the rioters. yes, the cartoons do in a sense blaspheme the central human figure in Islam. yes, religion might be the only thing keeping some of these people sane (or, it seems, insane) on this Earth. yes, religion defines for certain people the very core of their being. yet the myriad cartoons and other pieces of satyre directed against christianity do not drive me to go burn down a couple of embassies, nor do they suscitate in me a desire to do so. even if religion were all i had in this world, if i depended on it to make sense of this world, to define my role in it, to give me hope for a better life now or later, i'd like to think that someone insulting that religion would not incite me to burn shit or call for bloodshed and beheadings.

i do sympathize with the frustrations of the Arab-Muslim peoples about the way they are regarded by first-world countries. they have essentially been relegated to the status of annoying gnats buzzing around our source of oil, both by us and by the authoritarian governments that rule them. i'm fairly sure that in the back of a significant portion of westerners' minds is the question, "why can't they all be quiet for once, or just go away?" if not for oil and iraq, we wouldn't give more of a shit about this controversy than we do about darfur.

three things i forgot in my last post:

- it's amazing how much a cup of coffee and having done the readings can improve my enjoyment of lit classes. it's like, i'm awake *and* i know what the hell is going on! wow. too bad i didn't discover this before my last semester here.

- a mouse decided to audit my translation and society class (there are maybe 5 people in this class. murine input would be much valued). there was a lectern on the floor in the front corner of the classroom, and halfway through class i start seeing something peek out the small space between the lectern and the wall. the thing peeks out and disappears back into the lectern a couple times. at first i thought it was just a piece of fabric fluttering in and out with an air current from a heating vent. then the mouse became more adventurous and stepped all the way out, which completely freaked out two of the girls in the class, even though they were at least 10 feet away from the mouse. the teacher then tried to catch the mouse by placing a trash can horizontally on the floor and running the mouse into it. this did not work. instead, the mouse decided to forego the trashcan and run diagonally across the room to the safety and comfort of the radiator in the back of the room. again, intense yelps from the girls in the class, especially when the mouse got tangled momentarily in someone's bookbag.

two questions:

why are there mice in hamilton? there's no food in hamilton, apart from discarded lit hum and cc midterms, and the occasional spec. my late hamster (may he rest in peace) told me these make excellent rodent bedding, but not food.

and

why are people (girls) afraid of mice? they're 3 inches long! the only way they can hurt you is if they jump into your neck and gnaw on your carotid! that's never going to happen, because they are the ones who are deathly afraid of us!

- the babies that play around campus make me smile. yesterday as i was walking to the subway to get to tutoring, this baby, maybe 2, 3 years old, was playing soccer with his dad on college walk. after kicking the ball to his dad, he runs up to his dad, kicks the ball even further, and then proceeds to sprint in the opposite direction while shouting, "bye bye daddy!" so cute.
another baby story: a week or two ago, i saw a 5 year old standing on the sundial yelling to his probably-professor dad, "daddy daddy i'm going to give a talk!"

i think that's about it for now.
<img width='1' height='1' well, because i really don't feel like doing shit this semester. hence my writing now.

winter gala was saturday night, fueled by some large swigs of hypnotic, a couple wine glasses and a lemon drop. i was actually able to dance without feeling too ridiculous, thanks to some much-needed impromptu instructions. too bad fucking security shut down the bar at 1. they said there was nothing left, but, in plain site on the floor were several unopened cases of shitty, shitty wine. then they stopped the music and turned the lights on at 1:30, to make sure people would be out of low by 2. after some balloon gathering and pushing through a raging melee to get to the coat rack, judith, eunji rick and i went to casbah where we smoked some hookah and had some damn good algerian wine, at a reduced price because the waiter was french. heheheh. good times.
winter league was cold, and awesome. paul jawlik was there, nice to see him. gabi took a ruggles '05 picture which is apparently the cutest picture ever. we ended up playing savage for the last game and still won. booyah.
superbowl at ben's was lots of fun. we had plenty of beer and even more food; i definitely consumed too much of both substances. it was good to see everyone together. yesterday in east asian civ the professor framed the superbowl in daoist terms, as follows. in the weeks leading up to the superbowl, there is so much hype and discussion about it, and the game rarely lives up to its hype. this leads people to be disappointed with the game. a daoist would ask, who's fault is that? the players are only human, one can't fault them for playing just well enough to win. daoist criticism of sports commentary notwithstanding, i thought the game was fairly exciting. a couple big plays, some intense drives, nothing entirely spectacular but certainly more entertaining than the conference championships.
so yeah, an awesome weekend from start to finish. and i'm making money again. yay. thank god for postbacs and parents with crazy high expectations.
<img width='1' height='1' sold my soul to school for the next 8 years. but it'll be fun because i'll be in new york for most of my 20's, i already know a bunch of people who are here and/or staying here, and i'm sure i'll meet new people. i just said most of 20's.... shiiiit. the next time i'll have to think seriously about what the hell i'm gonna do for the next stage of my life i'll be almost 30 fucking years old. that's very, very old. many things can happen in 8 years. 8 years ago, i wasn't even in high school. 8 years ago i only had 3 siblings, i hadn't the faintest clue what "ultimate frisbee" was, college didn't even register as something to be thought about. 8 years ago, i was a little kid, twelve years old, not even a teenager. my life wasn't in my hands. so now, to think i've signed over the next 8 years is a little weird. my life will be in my hands. since md/phd programs are free and provide a stipend, i won't be relying on my parents for financial support in any way. i'm not sure how big of a change in my life that will constitute. i don't expect it to be drastic. i'll just have to be a little more careful about how i spend my money, something i think i'm pretty good at right now.

in other news.....

http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20060120/us_nm/life_university_dc_1

this is absolutely fucking incredible. if the students weren't offered money to do this, i'd be less outraged. but to pay students to identify left-wing professors to a right-wing activist group? this should be illegal, at least within the university. i have trouble thinking of actions that would more obstruct a student's potential to learn from these professors, or more stifle a professor's ability to teach and conduct research.

maybe one reason that the vast majority of academia is non-conservative stems from the fact that conservative ideas SUCK, that they aren't good for the world. academia is a setting in which people can examine ideas, think about them extensively, research them etc... perhaps the fact that persons whose job it is to think and research reject conservatism overwhelmingly these days is not solely due to intellectual ferment or intentional ostracism of conservatives in academic circles.

whew. i construct my sentences too much like latin or greek. sort of. in those language, you can make sentences as long and complicated as you want, with many clauses and subclauses, phrases and subphrases, and it's considered elegant, as long as the sentence is grammatically logical. not so with english. oh well.

this semester looks like it's gonna be a blast. if i can get a job.

i'm in a weird limbo academically. i'm cautiously optimistic about getting into cornell's mdphd program, as my interviews went very well (i think). still, it's by no means a done deal, and as a back-up plan it sucks, because a back-up plan needs to be a done deal. nonetheless, i find myself using my possible pending acceptance as an excuse not to do homework and not to work on other apps, especially my safeties (i realized today i missed BU's deadline). dec 7 can't come soon enough.

my plans for next semester stand as follows: take a bunch of fun non-science classes, do just enough work for them to not get un-accepted (unless the class is particularly engaging... heh that reminds of the calvin and hobbes -- calvin: i've been thinking... hobbes: on a weekend !?! calvin: not on purpose! --- anyway), try to get a paper out in lab, and, most of all, enjoy nyc more. that means i need to get a paying job, like teaching for kaplan or princeton review, if only to pay for metrocards and food/drink. and bahamas. and spring break. my bank account says ouch.

oh also, play ultimate, and get into some sick shape for sectionals and regionals.

bahamas = t - 1.5 months.

my patience for work is slowly wearing away. i can still study for tests, the cramming and all, but it's the problem-sets, the weekly quizzes, that i really don't care about. the day-in, day-out school work. come to think of it, i never really did do many problem sets, because they were more of an annoyance than anything else. now i sort of do them, but all along, i'm thinking, why do i care? what will happen if i just stop doing this now? the answer is, apart from a slight grade drop, nothing. nothing will happen. i could be doing so many things that aren't a waste of my time right now, but i should do this problem set so i can get a half letter grade higher. i don't know how well this bodes for the 2 more years of real school i have left after this college business is over. i've been thinking of taking a couple years off before starting whichever program i get into, maybe do teach for america. but after that i'd still have 7-8 years of md/phd, which would mean that i wouldn't be starting real life until i'm 30. not sure about how i feel about that yet. it's not that i really care about the delay in my professional life, it's more that i do want to start a family some day, and i just hope that all this 'career' crap won't get in the way. i guess that's all still a long way off.

something i've been thinking about over the past couple of weeks:

that the act of drinking itself seems to preoccupy some people more than the having fun with your friends part. not that having fun is neglected, it just seems that, at a social function that traditionally warrants some drinking, drinking is explicitly emphasized first. i'm talking about the following scenario:

person 1 encounters person 2 at a bar, party, whatever:

person 1: why the fuck don't you have a beer in your hand?

person 2: i just don't feel like it.

person 1: what the fuck does that mean?

I understand that sometimes this is just a joke. Other times though, it's seems like a genuine concern. Why does drinking become an end unto itself? It's not alcoholism, because I'm pretty sure these people could not have another drink in their lives and be fine. I don't think it's any pressure to fit in, because our group is pretty much formed, and stopping to drink or drinking more isn't going to change anyone's status. Is it just a lack of anything else to do? Or just a stress relief thing? Please post a 1.5 page response on courseworks by next Tuesday.

Perhaps a more important question: why did I start capitalizing in the last paragraph?

Also: congrats to marathon people. Y'all are crazy motherfuckers.

so, i'm linked on someone (gabi)'s blog again. i guess that means i should start posting again, so, without further ado:

post post post post post post post blog post post post post boobs post post post post. posty post post.

happy?

no?

too bad, i don't care.

so yeah, about this stoopid disciplinary hearing. our halloween party got too loud for the other suckers trying to sleep and study on halloween weekend, mostly because we opened the windows, as some douchebag forgot to wear deodorant. and it was hot. also, the party was unregistered. so we all have a warning on our res hall files, which means we can't get caught again with our windows open during a loud party, or we have "disciplinary probation" written in friendly letters on our transcripts, which is a very good way not to get into grad school, as amanda put it.

what's the point of this rant, you don't ask?

columbia sucks. they try to foster school pride and campus atmosphere and cohesiveness, but among the brilliant strategies they come up with to accomplish these goals, they (1) forbid people to bring alcohol to football games, and (2) go after parties on the most festive weekends of the year.

beh, i'm still at lab and it's 11:30pm. i should really, really be getting paid for this. time to finish this shit up, go to sleep, and then fly to chicago.

Long time no blog. A couple of days recently I've sat down with a half-assed intention of blogging, written a couple of sentences and then stopped. Call it laziness, fatigue, boredom, whatever...
The quick-recap-of-the-past-couple-weeks post will not come now.

Today was pretty awesome. Woke up, saw that Greece had won, had breakfast, lazified a bit, then went down to The Parlour (86th and B-way) to watch Spain vs. Russia, Euro 2004 Group A. Really good game, a couple of really exciting missed chances on both parts. Adrian said Russia deserved a draw, which I sort of agree with, but Spain did start to dominate a lot more once they scored their (nice) goal. At first the shot seemed a crapshoot, shooting into a bunch of defenders from 15 feet in front of the goal, but on the replay of the camera behind the net the brilliance emerged. He threaded it perfectly around and between closing defenders, at just the right moment. Of course if he hadn't, it wouldn't have been a goal, so that point is kind of moot. *ramble ramble*. More on today to come later.

vintage flanders.

me: chris you dirty bastard
chris: lol
chris: what!?
chris: maxime!?
me: hahaha
chris: moi!?
chris: i don't know what you are talking about
chris: i think you are the one with your dirty mind
chris: imagining compromising situations
chris: for certain individuals

(something something my sister possibly attending one of our parties).

So it seems that I will never get gmail until the final version comes out. That sorta kills the name of this fine piece of journalistic literature, but whatever. Once i actually get an account, I'll change it.
Anyway, I"m still home for another couple of days. Saw high school frisbee people at my brother's practices, so I got to play some ultimate! It had been.. about 2 weeks? Maybe 3. The coach, Mr. Larry David, refused to let me and some other alums play because it would be "unfair", or some bullshit like that.
Lexington is still the same old town. Movies with Chris and Adrian and ... HALO. On XBox. BOOYAH I love that game and I suck so much. It's good to be back and see da croo though
My house has also accumulated a ridiculous amount of cones and police barriers and those huge orange cylinder things from various coning incidents, mostly directed at my sister when her spanish exchange students came over. The plan is to unleash that entire arsenal into shaming one individual. Ah yes we are lame. Nonetheless it will be fun. I might keep a sign for my room next year though. We'll see.

Also, I need to take less courses next semester, and do less stuff. I don't think I'll be working in a lab anymore, because 1) I couldn't make any big enough time slots in my schedule and 2) I"m doing SURF this summer in the same lab, so that takes care of my lab requirement for the bio major. This semester was not disastrous by any extent of the imagination, but less good than the previous ones. Oh well, it's just a gpa.

About majors and workload too: I can't get myself to make a decision about how much classics I want to do. The full classics major? The classical studies major? The ancient studies major? Or just a classics minor? Or nothing at all, just take classes that look interesting to me. I really like the subject, for reasons that will be elaborated upon later if I can get them to make any sense in writing. But at the same time I don't want to take classes that I won't like. The other complicating factor is that I may want to study in Rome through some program run by Duke (the university), because it seems like it's a fuckin amazing program. Latin and Greek; Roman art, architecture and history, plus some renaissance stuff. To be accepted in the program though I probably need to be a classics major. And get some good letters of recommendation. Hopefully the elegaic poetry course with Gareth Williams (apparently one of the best profs at CU and chair of the classics department) next semester will get me a good letter.

so i'm home. until may 31st when i go back to columbs for SURF.
This end of the year brings about many things. For one, the seniors from Uptown Local are all leaving. I barely got to say my goodbyes at the party. Those people had become a very large and very welcome part of my social life in the past year, after I got freed up from certain ties. Not that those ties were not welcome when they were there, but nonetheless, knowing the ultimate folks like I know them now, I wish I had spent more time with them during my freshman year.
I think what bugs me most about their departure is that I don't know if I'll ever see them again. Come to think of it, the people I'm most likely (at least seen from now) to continue seeing for my whole life are those few people from high school that I keep seeing on breaks.
more ramblings of this nature to come later when i'm not so lazy.

i forgot about this post i had saved for edit on monday of last week. so here it is:

checkin out this new formatting thing...

finals so far:
CC done
italian done
physics done. this one is very special because it will push pure physics out of my life forever. hopefully physical chemistry, if i do end up taking it, will not have too much physics, though this seems unlikely.
bio done.

this leaves greek on thursday.
so, between now and thursday, i will be tossing, sleeping, drinking in small quantities to prime myself for thursday night, and studying if i can fit it into my busy, busy schedule.

hm still no gmail. I haven't heard of anyone who has created a blogger blog after the gmail offer came out and received an invitation. It is just a beta though, and I have found only one other person with my name in the world when I googled it.
Had my first 2 finals yesterday. Italian went fine, studied for 20 minutes before it and finished in an hour. Then came CC. Not so fun... Hopefully the prof will be generous, and hopefully she will remember all those times I participated in class, because I certainly can't.
STILL no idea if I'm gonna be in Boston this summer; as time passes it gets less and less likely. I guess working in Kandel's lab is not so bad though. But I would like to see more green this summer. Maybe because I'm not doing SURF my mentor will not care if I don't work that much. Go home for a week a couple times, throw parties when the rents are in Europe, see people from high school, play some ultimate with the old fooligans.

I wonder when someone is gonna find out about this. Is it bad form to tell people? Probably not...

still no gmail.....

on another note, regionals was a bit disappointing. when we get into that funk, it's so hard for us to get out of it and start playing well again. Maybe our poor showing was also due to the switching of practice times, which made us have only one practice a week where most people could show up and we could practice as a team.
still though.... princeton and rutgers went to backdoor semis? WTF????????
I have yet to completely test this hypothesis, but I think that because I was not there to watch our elimination game I was not as disappointed as the others on the team. I know that even when I'm on the sidelines, which is most of the time, and we start losing, I get very frustrated as well. Thanks for getting hurt, Mara!

Finals are coming up, but they haven't hit me yet. I've been reading a couple of CC books that I didn't touch this semester in a feeble attempt at studying, but something tells me I should do more, especially since I'm going to miss the review session. Fortunately I have something good to look forward to after that final...

the sole purpose (for now) of this thing is that i might get gmail. who knows if it'll work.

maybe, in the future, it might actually come into some real use.
